Scale degrees · F♯ major
The 6 of F♯ is D♯
The 6 (six) of F♯ (F sharp, F#) is D♯ (D sharp): a major sixth above the root.
F♯ — the root, 1D♯ — the 6
How to find it
Count letters first, the root included: F, G, A, B, C, D. A 6th lands on D.
Then the sound: a major sixth is 9 semitones above F♯, and the D that is 9 semitones up is D♯.
That is why it is D♯ and not E♭: E♭ is the same key on the piano, but from F♯ it would be a 7th, not a 6th.
Where you meet it
The 6 is the added note of a sixth chord. An octave up, on a dominant, it is the 13.
